BOSTON (Nov 30, 1995 - 10:26 EST) -- Nynex Corp. secretly taped
conversations between its marketing representatives and customers,
possibly violating a Massachusetts wiretap law, a report said.
"Massachusetts law in this area is pretty clear in requiring two-party
consent," said Ed Cafasso, a spokesman for the Massachusetts attorney
general's office. "This practice by Nynex obviously raises some
concern and we intend to pursue the matter with them."
The New York-based local phone company, which provides services
throughout New York and New England, could face civil and criminal
penalties, the Boston Herald reported.
The Herald said Nynex confirmed it installed taping equipment two
months ago to record calls with customers in New York and New England
in an effort to boost the quality of its marketing operations.
Nynex suspended the taping practice last night and said it was
confident the taping complied with Massachusetts law, the Herald said.
Nynex officials weren't immediately available for comment.
